Wellington art event gets $3.6m to cover Covid cancellation

The Wellington City Council has paid out NZ$3.6 million to the World of WearableArt (WOW) show which was forced to cancel for a second year in a row due to Covid restrictions.

Earlier this year the council agreed to underwrite the event which was estimated to have boosted the local economy by NZ$28 million when it was last held in 2019.

“Most of the money has gone to those people – artists, performers, technicians, choreographers etc, and a sizeable proportion of it will I am advised provide value for WOW 2022,” Mayor Andy Foster told Stuff.

Part of the underwrite agreement was to keep the show in Wellington for five more years, although it has yet to be formally agreed. But World of WearableArt chief executive David Tingey said he believed it would be.

The company behind the show is owned by Dame Suzy Moncrieff and her sister, Heather Palmer.
