Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) has aligned with OzHarvest to increase sustainability in the food waste sector and help them advocate, inspire and influence others to halve food waste by 2030.
Each year, food waste costs Australia $20 billion, while five million people experience food insecurity.
MCEC will be donating resources and service provision, ongoing food donations, workplace giving, fundraising and advocacy programs as well as contributing commercial kitchen space to OzHarvest, to trial their ‘Çooking for a Cause’ program for three days a week.
“Globally, one third of all edible food produced is thrown in the bin, and with one in every nine Australian’s unsure where their next meal is coming from, OzHarvest and their goals are relevant to all of us as a community,” MCEC chief executive Peter King said.
“At MCEC we are passionate about sustainability and being community-minded, and we completely align with what they are working to achieve.
“The events industry can contribute a lot of food waste, so this is the perfect way to try and reverse that cycle, and give back to those in Melbourne who need it most.”
Bernardo Tobias, OzHarvest state manager for Victoria, said the unwavering support from MCEC has helped feed more people in need during these challenging times.
“Thanks to our wonderful partnership with MCEC, OzHarvest has delivered close to 75,000 meals to the most vulnerable in our community in this time of increased need,” he said.
“We are also thrilled to be able to host our corporate engagement program ‘Çooking for a cause’ at the MCEC kitchens. There’s no better way to get involved with cause than by joining OzHarvest chefs to learn zero-waste cooking skills, while transforming rescued ingredients into hundreds of gourmet meals, ready for distribution to vulnerable communities.”
