The Everest horse race in Sydney will be capped at 5,000 spectators on condition NSW reaches its 70 per cent vaccination target.
The Australian Turf Club had proposed an exemption on crowd number caps for outdoor sporting events that would allow 15,000 spectators at next month’s race.
But the NSW Government denied the ambitious proposal in a crisis cabinet meeting on Monday.
“The Everest will be running on that date if the state has opened under the 70 per cent road map,” said Deputy Premier John Barilaro.
“The capacity at the moment is 5000 people. Whilst people can seek exemptions, I’ve got to be honest, I don’t think that would be appropriate at the very early stage of the 70 per cent road map.”
