Met Gala cancelled as New York adopts a ‘wartime mentality’

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has announced that its star-studded gala event on May 4 has been postponed “indefinitely”.

The announcement comes days after the museum revealed it was closing until further notice. This is the first time that the event, which can cost up to $35,000 a person, has been called off in the 22 years that Vogue editor-in-chief Wintour has chaired it.

New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the city’s bars and restaurants would be restricted to take-out or delivery and that nightclubs, cinemas, theatres and concert must close starting today.

“This is not a decision I make lightly,” De Blasio said in a statement. “These places are part of the heart and soul of our city. They are part of what it means to be a New Yorker. But our city is facing an unprecedented threat, and we must respond with a wartime mentality.”
