KI’s Southern Ocean Lodge reopens after $55m rebuild

Kangaroo Island’s Southern Ocean Lodge has unveiled the results of its $55 million rebuild following 2020’s devasting bushfires.

Set to open this week, it has taken four years for the luxury resort to be reimagined with new elements and features designed to keep it safe in the event of further bushfires, including a 20m buffer zone a state-of-the-art sprinkler system.

“For the community and landscape on Kangaroo Island the past four years as we’ve rebuilt Southern Ocean Lodge has been a period of regeneration,” Baillie Lodges founders James and Hayley Baillie said in a statement.

“We’re very proud and excited to have the chance to embark on a new chapter for Southern Ocean Lodge and to welcome old friends as well as a next generation of travellers to the wildly beautiful coasts of Kangaroo Island.”

The new resort has expanded its accommodation offering from 21 to 25 suites, including a new 640sqm “ultra-premium” Ocean Pavilion suite, featuring up to four bedrooms plus an outdoor terrace with wet-edge pool.
