Hobart has the highest hotel occupancy rates in Australia compared to other capital cities over the past two years, according to new data from Ray White.

Hobart posted more than 80 per cent hotel occupancy in 2022, the highest of all the nation’s capital cities.

Hobart is still topping the occupancy charts this year at slightly below 80 per cent.

The price of hotel rooms for a night has also followed the upward trend, costing $200 on average in 2022.

“We have a very strong product mix in Tasmania that is desired by mainland Australia, and international visitation as well,” Southern Destination Tasmania chief executive Alex Heroys told The Mercury.

“The business events sector is traditionally an off-peak tourism season offering, so it tends to deliver its events during the winter period, and that helps boost occupancy rates in Hobart to give us an annual all around figure.

“We do very well in the shoulder and off-peak seasons with Hobart’s stream of winter events, which kicks off with Dark Mofo and runs all the way through Festival of Voices, Tas Whiskey week, Hadley’s Art Prize, and many more and that gives us a very strong composition for what we call our off-season.”
