WA to introduce new contact tracing app for venues

A new QR code app has been launched by the WA Government ahead of mandatory contact tracing at public venues including function centres, restaurants, bars and hotels.

Set to begin from December 5, the new SafeWA app will only store a persons’ data for 28 days.

“We don’t have any COVID, which is a great thing, but we just want to be prepared in case we get an outbreak,” said Premier Mark McGowan.

WA Health minister Roger Cook said venue operators will not have access to the encrypted data on the app.

“[The data] will only be accessed in the event of an outbreak and will only be accessed by health personnel,” he said.

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said the contact register was a necessary tool to help reduce community risk while keeping businesses open.

“We cannot rely on hotel quarantine and business restrictions alone to protect the community from COVID-19,” he said.

“We must also maintain effective measures to track and trace any COVID transmission.”
