Virgin Australia resumes key domestic routes as borders reopen

Fresh from its sale to new owner Bain Capital, Virgin Australia is reinstating 17 domestic routes including a direct service from Sydney to Cairns.

“Travel is back on the agenda for many Australians and we’re happy to be able to resume flights to a number of holiday destinations in Queensland, Northern New South Wales and the Northern Territory,” Virgin Australia Group Chief Commercial Officer John MacLeod said.

“Many of our aircraft have been parked and our teams are preparing them to return to the skies, and with the increase in flights we’re announcing today, we’re looking forward to serving our guests as they travel to visit family and friends, or take a well-deserved break.”

The news comes a day after Qantas announced two new flights to regional NSW, with a direct service between Sydney and Byron Bay and its first ever flight to Orange from July 20.
