The Townsville region is among the top 10 fastest growing regions for international visitors, according to Expedia Group’s latest report.
The new report shows international demand for Queensland as a whole grew 40 per cent year-on-year, with regional towns among those that achieved the highest growth.
Townsville recorded 60 per cent growth putting it at number eight, tying with Port Macquarie and WA’s Coral Coast.
Magnetic Island was “a hero product for international visitors” according to TEL tourism and events director Bridget Woods.
“This report is positive news for the region and is a testament to the world class experiences our region is delivering for visitors,” Woods said.
The future is also looking rosy, with the Museum of Underwater Art set to become another major drawcard. The installation by artist Jason deCaires Taylor is expected to become an Instagram hit with travellers.
Regional Queensland continued to impact strongly in the top 20, with the Whitsundays, Cairns, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast all recording growth of 25 per cent or more.
The Murray (NSW) was the fastest growing region, followed by the Hunter Valley (NSW), Mackay (Qld) and Newcastle (NSW).
