Tasmanian Labor Leader and Shadow Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Rebecca White has called on Premier Peter Gutwein to reveal more details on where the $13.5 million in federal funding for the tourism and hospitality sector will be spent.
“The Federal Government promised $13.5 million for tourism initiatives last September,” White said.
“Now, here we are five months later, and tourism operators are still waiting, with no indication of when or where the money will be spent.”
White said the impending cut off of JobKeeper next month is leaving many operators under a cloud of uncertainty.
“The Deloitte report released in January identified that Tasmania was the most vulnerable state to cuts to JobKeeper,” she said.
“But instead of getting a much-needed shot in the arm, with the funds promised to them, they still don’t know when that funding will flow.”
White also called on the government to allocate any unspent money from the Make Yourself at Home travel voucher program towards tourism and hospitality operators and workers.
“The unspent money from the tourism vouchers must be used to navigate the next few critical months,” she said.
“Peter Gutwein needs to explain what has happened to the money and detail when it will start to flow out the door to help those in the tourism and hospitality sector.”
