South Australian businesses call for extended JobKeeper following loss of two major events

The announcement that two of Adelaide’s biggest events will not happen in 2021 has sparked concern among business owners who say the events sector will still need JobKeeper throughout March.

The Superloop 500 and Tour Down Under were both cancelled, albeit for different reasons, leaving a massive hole in what Adelaide calls Mad March.

A new Business SA survey showed three in four businesses in the events sector alone would still need to rely on JobKeeper during March.

Business SA chief executive Martin Haese has called on the government to provide ongoing support for those hardest hit by the restrictions and for a new major event to fill the gap left by the departure of the Superloop.

A Formula E race is one possible replacement event supported by Haese.

“Motoring events can bring more interstate and overseas visitors to Adelaide and, if positioned right, can deliver a significantly higher than average per person spend,” he said.
