Russia and Belarus left off the invite list for Paris Olympics

Russia and Belarus

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will not invite Russia and Belarus to attend the 2024 Paris Olympics when it sends out formal invitations to 203 countries on July 26.

“For the reasons given, this will exclude the NOCs (National Olympic Committees) of Russia and Belarus, plus the NOC of Guatemala, which is currently suspended,” the IOC said in a statement.

The IOC had been stalling any formal ban on the two countries competing despite increasing international pressure to boycott them since the invasion of Ukraine last year.

But some Russian and Belarusian athletes could still compete in the Games even if their national teams do not get a formal invitation.

“The IOC will take this decision at the appropriate time, at its full discretion, and without being bound by the results of previous Olympic qualification competitions,” the IOC said.
