Recover and reset on the Gold Coast

It has been a challenging year for the business events sector nationwide and while uncertainty still remains there are glimmers of hope and more importantly support.

More than ever, the events sector needs the reassurance that it can reopen in a safe way. But event organisers also need support at this critical time to allow them to create events that still inspire and energise their delegates.

To help the event sector as it begins to look ahead and reopen, the Gold Coast is giving a helping hand towards your conference and event costs to support your association or company through these unprecedented times.

For a limited time, Destination Gold Coast is offering a cash incentive to support new business events on the Gold Coast. New business events of any size or format confirmed by December 31 2020 will be eligible to apply.

Beyond the financial support, the Gold Coast also makes it easier to hold events in a ‘COVID safe’ way, with its multitude of open spaces and venues, ease of accessibility and sunny outdoor lifestyle the perfect recipe to instill confidence in delegates and make planning an inspiring event much easier and much safer.

Confidence is the key word for all event stakeholders in the current environment, from delegates through to sponsors, with the Gold Coast ticking all the boxes to ensure everyone will be reassured.

The Gold Coast’s warm weather and low-density population makes walking between venues an effective way to avoid the pitfalls of using closed transport environments.

For those needing to bring people into a four walled environment, the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) is operating under its Site Specific COVID Safe Plan.

Approved by the Gold Coast Public Health Unit, the plan covers all essential areas of operation including increased cleaning, heightened hygiene practices and social distancing protocols – with new floor plans, food and beverage service, training and record keeping – to ensure the ultimate event experience in a ‘COVID safe’ venue.

The venue could potentially host up to 4500 visitors per day based on one person per 4 square metres, while the arena has a ‘COVID safe’ capacity of between 1500 and 3000 people.

“We’re in a unique position on the Gold Coast to be able to accommodate larger events such as conferences, meetings and dinners adhering to current distancing regulations,” says Adrienne Readings, GCCEC’s general manager.

Village Roadshow Theme Parks has also begun welcoming back events across its 64 indoor and outdoor spaces including its conference centre at Sea World Resort.

“Organisers want the assurance that our venues are ‘Covid safe’ for their event and being able to view our social distancing floor plans and our hygiene protocol but also working with us on more flexible booking agreements and creative AV solutions,” says Caroline Duveau-Clayton, head of conferences and events at Village Roadshow Theme Parks.

“Having large spaces has certainly helped our ability to still welcome conferences and events.

“Social distancing is still applicable in open air venues however the size of our venues allows us to not only cater for large events still but also being to run multiple events on the same nights across our six properties.”

Taking advantage of the climate, QT Gold Coast has recently unveiled its reinvented poolside precinct and neighbouring lawn and terrace, The Green. The new outdoor precinct is part of a hotel-wide refurbishment that includes a new conferencing and events space catering up to 150 people.

There are also exciting developments in the pipeline, with The Star Entertainment’s luxury Dorsett hotel two years away and The Langham, Gold Coast set to open next year.

JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts will also make its debut in Australia this December following a $35 million rebrand of Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa into the JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa.

All the hotel’s 223 rooms and suites will be reimagined in addition to 2000sqm of refreshed function space featuring 10 meeting spaces including an upgraded pillarless 715sqm JW Ballroom.
