Qatar Airways triumphs at Skytrax awards but Qantas tumbles seven places

Qatar Airways has been named the world’s best airline in the annual Skytrax awards.

Qatar Airways is still trying to add more flights to Australia after being denied a request for 28 additional flights a week last year in a controversial decision by the government.

Last year’s winner Singapore Airlines dropped to second with Emirates rounding out the top three.

Qantas continued its losing streak tumbling out of the top 20, slipping from 17th to 24th spot in the global rankings. But the carrier redeemed itself in the regional awards winning best business class and best premium economy class in the Australia-Pacific.

Fiji Airways took out best airline for the Australia-Pacific ahead of Air New Zealand, with Qantas third and Rex fourth.

“We want our customers to feel the difference from the changes that we have put in place and in recent months we have seen customer satisfaction levels improve,” a Qantas spokesman said.
