Public Hospitality Group loses Calombaris headed Greek restaurant Alpha

Public Hospitality Group has lost control of hatted Greek restaurant Alpha, which is headed by chef George Calombaris.

Owned by the Hellenic Club, Alpha has been part of Public’s portfolio since last December. The restaurant is now under control of experienced Sydney hospitality figure Con Dedes.

“On behalf of (my wife) Kerrie, myself and the team at Dedes Group, we are honoured to be adding Alpha restaurant and Beta Events to our suite of hospitality venues,” Dedes told Good Food.

“We thank the Hellenic Club for their trust and it is certainly not lost on me that we inherit an asset with wonderful Greek heritage, humility and, as the Hellenes, say filotimo [love of honour and duty]. Our team will work hard to uphold this beautiful legacy.”

Dedes said there was “a conversation to be had” on Calombaris’ future with the restaurant.

Founded in 2021, Public’s meteoric rise has been weighed down by debt issues, with owner Jon Adgemis only recently securing a $400 million refinancing deal with a consortium led by Deutsche Bank.
