The New South Wales Government has scrapped plans to relocate Sydney’s Powerhouse museum from its Ultimo site to a new space in Parramatta.
The decision to sell the Ultimo site and relocate the industrial science museum west was made more than five years ago.
But this week NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian surprised everyone by announcing that both sites will operate alongside each other. The Ultimo facility was due to be closed in stages beginning this month.
“What’s most important is that the destination that we’ve reached is the right decision for the people of our state,” NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet Perrottet said. “In a Covid world, we’ve had to look at new ways of doing things.
“We’ll have a world-class facility for the people of western Sydney, a world-class facility here in Ultimo and that’s what our people deserve here in our state.”
The government had planned to sell the Ultimo site for up to $195 million.
The Powerhouse Precinct in Parramatta is slated to open in 2023.
