Police drones to scan the skies at Melbourne events from August

Major events in Melbourne will be monitored from above by police from as early as next month.

The drones will operate as part of a new specialist unit to be managed by Police Air Wing. They able to run 24/7 and will be equipped with night vision to monitor high-risk areas throughout the night.

“It will also assist when police attend emergency situations with the ability to fly a drone in to provide advice to someone in a tricky situation or supply first aid equipment or water,” said Inspector Craig Shepherd.

Police are looking to operate up to 50 drones within the next 12 months.
