New Brisbane tourism experiences get $10k boost

A raft of new tourism experiences in Brisbane are set to receive funding from a new grant scheme.

Funds from the Lord Mayor’s Experience Development Incentive Grant Program have been awarded to five city and regional tourism operators including a tour exploring Brisbane’s food history from its Indigenous cultural beginnings to its present-day cuisine and a guided river journey showcasing Brisbane’s fascinating maritime history.

“The Lord Mayor’s Experience Development Incentive Grant Program is encouraging tourism operators to expand their existing offerings and work in partnership with other operators to create unique experiences for visitors,” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said.

“Creating more to see and do in the Brisbane region will increase visitor numbers and encourage them to stay longer, supporting our accommodation, tourism, retail and hospitality businesses – large and small.”

Queensland Tourism Industry Council CEO Daniel Gschwind said the Lord Mayor’s Experience Development Incentive Grant Program inspired tourism operators to deliver what they loved about the city and region.

“Encouraging tourism operators to embrace those genuine, home-grown experiences is important because that is what the consumer is looking for,” he said.

Five grants of $10,000 have been allocated to five projects:

Nyanda Cultural Tours/Delectable Tours – ‘A Fusion of Taste and Time: Brisbane Cultural Food Journey’

Visitors are set to time travel through Brisbane’s food history, experiencing the original Jagera Indigenous culture and bush foods at the Nar-dah Nudgee Waterhole Reserve before exploring Brisbane’s food evolution by touring its present-day cuisine offerings, discovering tastes and flavours along the way that unite these eras.

Queensland Maritime Museum/Riverlife/Newstead House/Australian Catering Services – ‘Brisbane Maritime Heritage Experience’

Visitors are set to discover the intrigues, stories and landmarks of Brisbane’s maritime history through a Queensland Maritime Museum guided tour, delicious hot lunch, a walking tour of South Brisbane, a river cruise with commentary and a guided tour of historic Newstead House with afternoon tea.

Brisbane Powerhouse/Romeo Digital – ‘Tour Brisbane Powerhouse – Personal and Digital Offering’

This proposed self-guided digital tour allows visitors to use in-house wi-fi on their own devices to discover the Brisbane Powerhouse’s activities and navigate their way through the venue’s indoor and outdoor public spaces – with the ability to align with river and cultural tourism offerings potentially coming online in coming months.

Local Taste Discoveries – ‘Farm gate, Food and Scenic Adventures’

In collaboration with Scenic Rim, Somerset and Lockyer Valley food producers and tourism operators, tour company Local Taste Discoveries is planning an immersive and informative day tour that showcases fresh local produce, highlights the region’s mountains and agricultural landscapes, provides ‘hands-on’ experiences and incorporates memorable stories.

Pterodactyl Helicopter Tours/The Nook Collection – ‘Gourmet Picnics by Helicopter’

These two operators plan to team up and showcase Brisbane city and region by whisking visitors by helicopter to spectacular heritage and scenic locations for intimate and exclusive experiences.

The new tourism offerings are expected to be developed by March 2020.
