Military deployed in Sydney to help with enforcement issues

Defence Minister Peter Dutton said the ADF will support police on Sydney streets.

Hundreds of Australian Defence Force personnel have been deployed across Sydney as tougher restrictions come into effect across a number of LGA hotspots.

“You’ll see some people today and over the next day or two we’ll stand up 300 people, it’s a significant deployment,” Defence Minister Peter Dutton told 2GB’s Ben Fordham.

The soldiers will not have the same authority as police but would help with enforcement issues.

“Obviously there’s an enforcement issue in NSW, (soldiers) can really help multiply the forces,” he said.

“For example, a police officer joined by two soldiers, that allows NSW police to cover much more territory, helps contain the virus and helps keep people in place.”
