Melbourne’s Crown Casino cops $1m fine for junkets

Crown Casino has been fined the maximum amount of $1 million for failing to keep the necessary records relating to junkets in order to keep the casino free from criminal influence.

“The commission concluded that in respect of the analysed individuals, the processes implemented by Crown were not robust,” the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) said.

“This failure [to maintain the necessary records relating to junkets] meant it was unclear how certain decisions were reached by Crown and whether such decisions were made with due regard to Crown’s regulatory obligations.”

The commission has also barred Crown from starting junket operations in the future.

Crown is also subject to a royal commission which is looking at its suitability to run the Melbourne casino. The findings will be released in August.
