Melbourne in the top 10 global destinations for sustainable tourism

Melbourne has made the top 10 of global destinations for sustainable tourism in new rankings by Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Movement and Tripadvisor.

The Travellers’ Choice “Best of the Best” awards showcase Tripadvisor users’ favourite sustainable destinations based on rankings and reviews, integrating GDS-Index data, which measured sustainability efforts in 100 destinations across four performance areas – city environment performance, city social sustainability performance, tourism supply chain and destination management organisation.

Europe leads with eight out of the top 10 environmentally and socially responsible cities.  Denmark’s Copenhagen claimed the top position, while the Asia-Pacific region saw Singapore and Melbourne come in at fifth and sixth spot respectively.

“These cities serve as role models in sustainable tourism, showcasing a shared dedication to a more sustainable and resilient future in travel,” said Guy Bigwood, CEO at GSD-Movement.

Kristen Dalton, president of Tripadvisor, said the new category helps guide people looking to travel more sustainably.

“Tripadvisor’s community of global travellers is passionate about sustainability as a consideration for when they’re planning trips and we’re proud to highlight such an important category,” Dalton said.
