Masks mandatory across Victoria after worst Covid spike yet

Victoria has recorded it biggest spike in daily Covid-19 infections, recording 723 new cases overnight and 13 additional deaths.

The state has now recorded a total of 9998 cases of COVID-19 and the death toll has risen to 105.

In response, the Andrews government is mandating mask use for the entire state, from midnight on Sunday.

“It’s inconvenient, it’s challenging, but it’s essentially Stage 4 for Melbourne, and it’s something we can do in regional Victoria without causing significant economic cost, but getting a really significant public health benefit,” Premier Dan Andrews said.

“That is an appropriate next step.”

Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos described today’s daily figure as “incredibly disappointing”, but was confident the state “can bring this number down.”
