Watch brands Rolex and Patek Philippe have announced they are withdrawing from Baselworld, joining Rolex sister brand Tudor, Chanel and Chopard in the exodus of what was once the largest and most important watch exhibition in the world.
They are instead heading to a new as yet unnamed event in Geneva in April 2021, to be organised in cooperation with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH).
Rolex said their decision followed Baselworld making ” a number of unilateral decisions made without consultation”.
Baselworld organisers MCH said it was surprised by the statement.
“The new date for the unavoidable postponement of Baselworld 2020 was set jointly with leading exhibitors,” MCH said. “The objective was to find the earliest and best possible date for the industry following the COVID-19 related measures.
“In the next few weeks, the MCH Group will be making a decision on whether to continue Baselworld and on investment in its long-term further development.”
