The Federal Government has extended the international travel ban for another three months.
The ban on outbound international travel was set to expire this month, but Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt announced it will remain in place until at least March 17, 2021. A ban on domestic and international cruises and restrictions will also be extended until March.
“What that says is the international world remains a challenging and dangerous environment,” Hunt said.
“The risks abroad are enormous, and if we don’t maintain these important protections, then we won’t be protecting Australians.”
Acting Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly said the decision was based on advice that the situation overseas continues to pose an “unacceptable public health risk”.
“We weighed up all of the issues, particularly the ongoing situation internationally, and the sort of risks that could come to Australia if we relaxed at this point,” he said.
