Holiday Inn rebrands as Cairns Harbourside Hotel with a focus on business events

Taisei Kanko Australia has relaunched the former Holiday Inn in Cairns as a self-managed, independent hotel branded as Cairns Harbourside Hotel.

Glen Macdonald has been appointed general manager to facilitate the change from global management to local management.

Macdonald was GM and then CEO of Fitzroy Island Resort for over 12 years and has served as a Board member of the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators.

The hotel is one of Cairns’ most established hotels for conferences, events and groups, with four event spaces that make the most of the gardens and picturesque views. The four function rooms can host conferences for up to 120 delegates.

Glen Macdonald is the general manager of the newly rebranded Cairns Harbourside Hotel.

The Hotel’s Harbourside Bar & Kitchen offers a farm-to-table dining experience focusing on local produce with an extensive organic wine list, served against a backdrop of Trinity Bay.

Other facilities available to guests staying at the hotel include a swimming pool, spa, and a CBD shuttle service.

Additionally, the owners plan to refresh the rooms, involving new furnishings and upgrading bathrooms.

“I was fortunate enough to lead the team at Fitzroy Island Resort as it established a new direction after I joined in 2011, and I am looking forward to being part of the fresh new vision for Cairns Harbourside Hotel,” Macdonald said.

“All the travel trends in recent years have highlighted the increasing desire for accommodation that captures the destination’s DNA. With the new brand image and the plans for upgrading the hotel, we look forward to delivering a very authentic Tropical Queensland experience through interior design, our restaurant’s menu, and warm and relaxed service.

“We will use the hotel’s relaunch as part of the ‘revival’ message to domestic and international audiences.

“In particular, we will work with existing and new business event organisers to expand our meetings, events and incentive business.

“The hotel is tailor-made for relaxed and vibrant conferences and functions, with delegates getting a really distinctive taste of the destination when staying at Cairns Harbourside Hotel.”
