Sydney’s Hillsong Church has bought one of Melbourne’s most iconic music venues, laying down $23 million for Festival Hall.
“By God’s grace … we’ve been able to purchase Festival Hall,” Hillsong founder Brian Houston said on the church’s YouTube channel.
The venue has seen the likes of the Beatles, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Powderfinger grace its stage over the years.
The venue also hosted a range of events during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
“Hillsong will be the anchor tenant − we’re going to continue running it as a community venue,” Houston said.
