The Federal Sports Minister has thrown her support behind the Queensland government’s decision to scrap an independent body to oversee the infrastructure development for the Brisbane Olympics in 2032.

Federal Sports Minister Anika Wells said the Deloitte report that had been commissioned to look at the governing structure of the planning process for the Games had “endorsed the particular model the Premier is taking forward”.

“We support it and our government … we‘re still working on this process to get to the exact proposed government and governance arrangements,” Wells told the ABC.

“I‘m confident that the Commonwealth that I’ll represent will be appropriately represented at all levels of decision making.

“All of these assets are ultimately remaining in public ownership. This was the right model and it’s been endorsed by a wide variety of stakeholders.”

The Federal Government is set to shoulder most of the bill for the $2.5 billion Brisbane Live arena, with Wells calling it a project “well worth doing given the legacy that will leave behind for Brisbane”.
