Ekka cancelled as Southeast Queensland lockdown extended by five days

The lockdown for South East Queensland has been extended by a further five days after 15 new cases of the Delta variant were recorded.

“It really and truly spreads so rapidly,” said Chief Health Officer Jeanette Young.

The lockdown has forced the Brisbane Ekka to cancel just days out from its first day.

“The RNA is today announcing the cancellation of the Stud Beef Cattle Show which was due to commence at the Brisbane Showgrounds on Tuesdays,” the organisers told exhibitors.

“The RNA’s Led Steer Carcass and Prime Cattle competitions will proceed as planned because they can be run offsite safely.”

The Ekka Prime Beef Cattle Competition will continue offsite at Silverdale Saleyards in the Scenic Rim.

“I know that’s sad and disappointing for many, many Queenslanders,” said Deputy Premier Steven Miles.

“We just can’t afford to have an event like that. The risk is just far too great.”
