Destination Gold Coast calls for rate payer funding boost to help tourism recovery

Destination Gold Coast is calling for a one-off $7.3 million Covid-19 package to help the tourism industry recover from the shutdown.

To be shouldered by ratepayers, the funding boost request comes as Queensland looks to ease various restrictions including the reopening of restaurants and cafes.

The shutdown is expected to cost the local economy more than $4 billion as the Gold Coast misses out on between 8 and 10 million visitors this year as a result of the coronavirus.

The funding would be used to target the domestic market, and New Zealand once travelling restrictions are eased.
