Dark Mofo has cancelled next year’s event with organisers saying they needed “a period of renewal” with only the Winter Feast and Solstice Swim to run on their own in 2024.

“After 10 years of darkness, and in preparation for 10 more, Dark Mofo is pausing in 2024 for a period of renewal,” the organisers said in a statement.

“Since Dark Mofo’s inception back in 2013, the festival has felt the weight of shifting conditions and the burden of escalating costs. While 2023 left an indelible mark, it also exacted its toll, prompting the decision to pause, reflect and plan out a more sustainable future.”

The full festival is expected to return in 2025.

“We want to make sure that we have a festival that continues to deliver incredible art and artists, that continues to expand its artistic boundaries and remains a beacon of creativity, innovation and cultural significance,” said new artistic director Chris Twite.

This year’s festival saw record attendence and box office figures.
