Christchurch has secured a multi-million global sailing event beating off competition from other New Zealand cities.
To be held next January as part of SailGP’s second season, the New Zealand grand prix event will be held on Lyttelton Harbour.
Loren Heaphy, general manager of ChristchurchNZ, said it was an “entirely different event to those we typically attract to Christchurch”.
“The harbour lends itself to close-up viewing of the racing, offering a rare spectator experience,” she told Stuff.
The inaugural SailGP event was held in Sydney in 2019 before being suspended in 2020 due to the pandemic.
