Call to cancel Sydney’s NYE fireworks

NSW Deputy premier John Barilaro said there is “no option but to cancel” Sydney’s annual NYE fireworks display to protect the public from a potential Covid-19 outbreak.

Such a move would be the first time in 32 years the end of year celebrations have not run. The event attracts more than a million spectators to inner-city Sydney every year.

Barilaro said the cancellation of several other major events in regional NSW, such as the Tamworth Country Music Festival and Falls Festival, served as a precedent for cancelling Sydney’s NYE celebrations.

“If the regions have to lose big tourism events, then there is no option but to cancel the big drawcard events in Sydney,” he said.
