Cairns is back in business

Cairns & Great Barrier Reef is back in business with the Cairns Convention Centre reopening its doors after a major refurbishment. The Centre will be hosting the Australian Banana Growers Congress in May followed by the Australian College of Emergency Medicine Winter Symposium as delegates start to meet again.

The Centre closed last April to begin the $176 million refurbishment and expansion. The refurbishment is now complete and the Centre has been fitted with state-of-the-art technology and a refurbished contemporary designed interior. Delegates will be treated to the latest audio-visual equipment and a fresh new menu featuring tropical local produce.

As the Cairns Convention Centre starts to host events again the Centre’s multi-million-dollar expansion is well underway. The expansion has been designed to bring more of the region’s beautiful tropical environment inside and the inspiration for the Centre’s new façade will feature tropical plants from the region.

The Cairns Convention Centre expansion will include a new 410-seat plenary on a flat floor that can be split into two equal rooms. Next to the new plenary is an exhibition space for up to 30 booths. Also on this level are three new meeting rooms that can each hold more than 110 people theatre style. The flexible design of the rooms allows them to combined or made into various configurations.

With beautiful views, the Trinity Room is ideal for gala dinners and large cocktail functions. The room is able to host up to 470 people. There is also a large pre-function space outside the doors. The Trinity Terrace has stunning views over the Trinity Inlet. The tropical outdoor area is ideal for cocktail functions, lunches or unique events wanting to enjoy Cairns’ beautiful tropical weather.

The entire Centre will hold 2,500 delegates comfortably while the refurbished arena takes up to 5,000.

Every element of your business event is close by; walk to meetings alongside the Coral Sea, lunch under swaying palm trees, drive through ancient rainforests, and dine in the cane fields.

Lose yourself in spectacular events and embrace our tropical landscape, discover new learnings and allow delegates to reconnect with each other and with themselves.

An evolving destination

Cairns & Great Barrier Reef is a regional area with the business events infrastructure and industry professionalism to successfully compete with major capital cities as a global meeting destination. With a small population base, wide open spaces and one of Australia’s leading regional international airports, this region is highly desirable for conferences, meetings and events particularly as business events evolve in a post Covid-19 world.

In recent years, major investments in the region have led to the development of new resorts and hotels that will impress new and returning delegates.

The Crystalbrook group have built three 5-star hotels, and Oaks Cairns Hotel has recently opened providing delegates with a wide range of accommodation options to suit everyone’s budget. With plans to open in Port Douglas in 2023, hospitality hotel group Accor is bringing the Fairmont brand to Australia for the first time, adding to the eco-luxury accommodation offering in our region.

Working alongside two World Heritage areas, sustainability continues to be a priority for the destination with myriad eco-certified touring and activities. Leading the way is the Port Douglas Daintree region proven as a long-term leader in innovative and sustainable practices as Australia’s first – and only – destination with Ecotourism accreditation.

Local event venues and operators are creating great initiatives that give back to the reef and their community. Hemingway’s Brewery donates a portion of beer sales to support Great Barrier Reef Legacy and Crystalbrook hotels have saved over 2.3 million plastic bathroom bottles from landfill by switching small amenity bottes for large pump bottles, further empowering delegates to leave greater as a human being.

Endless opportunities to explore the region

Genuine connections to the community and the environment can be made through activities that include the ancient stories of Traditional Owners and operators who nurture the region’s World Heritage areas.

For a truly memorable event, let the region’s natural assets shine at any of the outstanding offsite venues available. Feel the sand between your toes with an exclusive dinner on an island in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef, relax with colleagues amongst cane fields or dine in the rainforest at an elegant outdoor ballroom at Flames of the Forest.

Get the adrenalin pumping as you race down white-water rapids on a raft surrounded by the tropical rainforest. For a memorable and bonding experience, white water rafting offers exciting team building activities from ropes courses to treasure hunts down the river. Get your colleagues involved in raft racing and group rescues or fun games with your tour guide.

Our passionate people deliver memorable and enriching business events; ensuring every delegate leaves empowered through new learnings and enriched with genuine connections.
