Business Events Wellington has appointed Leanne Douglass as its new business development manager for Australia.

Douglass recently worked in visitor economy development for the Tamworth Regional Council before joining the City of Newcastle as a business event specialist.

She will be joining the Business Events Wellington team at Meetings in Rotorua this week to meet with Australian clients attending the trade show.

“I’m excited to begin my new role and start developing business opportunities that support the visitor economy and create positive impacts for Wellington,” Douglass said.

Business Events Wellington manager Irette Ferreira says Australia is Wellington’s most important international market for conferences.

“Having someone dedicated to Australia in-market is of strategic importance and reflects our commitment to this market,” Ferreira said.

Wellington has seen a significant increase in the number and scale of Australian conferences choosing the city since the opening of Tākina Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre in June 2023.

Later this year, Tākina will play host to its largest Australian conference to date when it welcomes the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for its Annual Scientific Meeting, which is expected to attract 900 delegates.

“We are excited to continue building relationships in Australia and attracting Australian conferences and delegates to Wellington,” Ferreira said.
