Adelaide to scrap event fees to boost recovery

Illuminate Adelaide was impacted by the recent seven day lockdown.

Adelaide City Council is looking at ditching event fees for organisers in a bid to boost the city’s recovery from the last week-long lockdown.

“Our city businesses have had an extremely difficult 18 months,” said Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor.

“We are exploring ways to boost their income with more customers while also lowering their costs.”

Under the proposed Reignite Adelaide strategy, organisers would no longer have  pay fees to use council-owned spaces to hold shows or exhibitions. Fees for sites in the Adelaide Parklands would also be temporarily be scrapped.

“The event industry recently experienced a significant setback, with the seven-day lockdown coinciding with the Illuminate Adelaide and Umbrella festivals, among others,” the council report stated.

“Understandably, some event organisers will be reluctant to invest in major events until conditions change significantly. Some events with bookings in the Parklands have been cancelled recently.”

Other solutions in the plan include new outdoor dining areas, street parties and live entertainment.
